RPG Dice

Tabletop RPGs are a world of infinite possibilities, where players can explore, battle, and live out epic stories. But behind every action lies a simple tool that brings this fantasy to life – RPG dice.

Whether it’s deciding the fate of a character in combat, resolving a social interaction, or determining the success of a skill, dice play a critical role in keeping the game balanced and exciting.

In this post, we’ll explore the five essential roles that RPG dice play in making these games immersive, thrilling, and unpredictable.

1. Element of Chance

One aspect of a tabletop rpg that separates it from a basic board or card game is a focus on imitating reality. Sure some board games may mi9rror reality in minor ways - like buying fake property or curing a fictional pandemic - but you don’t feel like you’re really there.

Tabletop RPGs are different. They allow you to imagine you are in a fantasy world, going on epic adventures where the stakes feel real.

The real magic happens when you almost believe you’re there. It’s a story that sometimes feels so real that you shout for joy when you defeat a villain, and you may even shed real tears when a beloved character dies.

But just like in real life, a player can do whatever they want—but every choice has consequences. There’s always a risk of failure.

In real life, when we try to accomplish a difficult task, our skills usually determine if we succeed or fail. But regardless of how skilled we are, there is always a element of chance

And that’s where RPG dice come in. Although a Game Master (GM) and players can create a world that mimics reality, they can’t replicate chance without bias. Dice, however, can. Rolling dice replicates the random chance we experience in life and adds fairness and unpredictability to the game.

2. Encouraging Risk-Taking and Luck

Many players and Game Masters have a love-hate relationship with their dice. This makes sense because if a die roll is off by just one number it can mean the difference between success or failure and in extreme cases, life or death.

When dice don’t work out in your favor it can be extremely frustrating, especially when your character is attempting to do something that seems extremely easy or simple. Some players have even been known to punish their dice by putting them in “dice jail” if they start misbehaving.

But dice also encourage risk-taking. For example, in Dungeons & Dragons, players might attempt nearly impossible feats simply because there’s a slim chance it will work.

They might decide to jump off a cliff, aiming to land perfectly on a flying dragon to deal the final blow and kill it mid-air. Is it difficult? Yes. Is there a high risk of failure? Absolutely. But is it possible? Technically, yes—and it’s that chance of success that pushes players to take daring risks.

On the flip side, when a player gets the perfect dice roll, the feeling is euphoric. Pulling off an impossible move or defeating a powerful enemy because of a lucky roll is something players will never forget.

3. Balance of Challenge and Success

Imagine if everything in life were guaranteed. No matter what you tried, you would always succeed. It might sound great on paper, but in reality, it would make for a very dull life.

Part of the joy in life is the challenge, the struggle, and finally, the sense of accomplishment when you succeed after hard work.

The same holds true for tabletop RPGs. Without dice, there would be a tendency to win at everything. Want to pick a master lock? Easy. Defeat a Kraken in the middle of the ocean? No problem. But with no risk of failure, there’s no real enjoyment or satisfaction. You need a balance of success and failure to keep things interesting.

Dice also help to distribute the responsibility of outcomes between the Game Master and the dice. If a player fails, it’s the dice’s fault—not the GM’s arbitrary decision.

This neutrality helps create a fair environment. In Pathfinder, for instance, when a player rolls poorly while trying to disarm a trap, they blame the dice rather than feeling cheated by the GM’s judgment.

4. Roleplaying and Storytelling

In a tabletop RPG, your character will make all sorts of decisions, from exploring ancient ruins to negotiating with NPCs (Non-Player Characters). This decision-making process is called roleplaying.

As mentioned in a previous post, the basic formula for roleplaying is Description, Choice, and Consequences. The Game Master describes the scene, the player decides what to do, and the GM tells the player what happens as a result.

But what happens when a player wants to attempt something difficult? For example, say a player is trying to blend in at a fancy party to gather crucial information without being exposed as a fraud.

The GM might ask them to roll dice to determine if they succeed. If the player rolls at or above a specific number, they manage to stay undercover. If not, they might be exposed and thrown out.

Rolling dice can add suspense to roleplaying moments like these, adding stakes to even the simplest decisions. In Call of Cthulhu, where players often face sanity-threatening situations, dice rolls can determine whether they maintain their composure or spiral into madness.

5. Combat and Tactical Decision-Making

If tabletop RPGs were a coin, roleplaying would be one side, and combat would be the other. Combat is essentially a more tactical form of roleplaying, where players make decisions to attack, defend, or maneuver their characters in strategic ways.

For example, in Dungeons & Dragons, players roll dice to determine whether their attack hits an enemy. Every enemy has an Armor Class (AC), and players must roll above this number to land a hit.

Dice also determine how much damage is dealt once a hit connects. Martial weapons, spells, and other attacks all have corresponding dice that indicate damage potential.

But the beauty of dice in combat goes beyond just numbers. They introduce a level of uncertainty that makes battles exciting. Even the most skilled warrior might miss a crucial blow due to a poor roll, while a weak character could land a critical hit thanks to a lucky throw.

Combat without dice would lack tension and unpredictability. Without dice, every encounter would be too predictable. Whether it's a sword clashing with armor, an archer aiming for a weak spot, or a wizard casting a powerful spell, the dice ensure that every battle feels fresh and filled with possibilities.

In conclusion, RPG dice do much more than determine success or failure—they create excitement, introduce risk, and bring both joy and frustration to the table.

Whether players are roleplaying, fighting in combat, or deciding on a risky move, dice keep the game fair, balanced, and full of suspense.

Every roll adds to the story and brings moments that players will remember for years. Dice may not always be kind, but they make every game session a unique and thrilling experience.
